You
stand in the hustle and bustle of your regular life,
staring at that door, wanting what waits for you
inside—a vacation home in Tuscany—but
not knowing how, until you see the door turn. The
people moving through the door look different, they
are smiling, having just experienced the contemplative
life inside. You step up to the door and push. You
spend a moment in that space between two doors still
seeing the outside, but anticipating what’s
inside. You feel your heart beat. Then with the
forward motion of your initial push, the door in
front of you opens and the door behind you ushers
you in. Everything seems different. You start to
slow down, you breathe. You walk the stone paths.
You look at the mountains surrounding you, touch
the chestnut trees. You make coffee, have a glass
of wine. You are present. You sense the presence
of those who have come before you and leave something
beautiful for those who follow. Your faith restored,
you push the door to exit, carrying everything you
experienced inside. It all begins with one push.
