Owner: Julie Hampton
Raised in Wisconsin, Julie moved to Minneapolis in 1987 to attend the University of Minnesota where she received a B.A. in English and volunteered for the University YMCA. In 1994, after one too many part-time jobs and days of 70 degrees below wind chill and the persistent question, "so, what are you going to do with that English degree…teach?" she packed her red VW rabbit and drove west. She directed the Writer's Voice of the Valley of the Sun YMCA from 1995 to 2000 and became a barista and yogi in her spare time. Indeed, in 1999, she ended up teaching creative writing at a local arts high school and started graduate school. In July 2001, she bought Casa di Julie with her cashed in YMCA retirement account, the $1000 investments of 60 amazing, risk-taking angels (some she had never and still hasn't met), an extended line of credit from her credit union and a small loan from her folks. In May 2005, she received her M.F.A. in creative writing from Arizona State University where she collaborated with dancer Casey Blake to develop HUNG, a performance around a series of poems she wrote. Currently she teaches for Art Institute of Phoenix and Scottsdale Community College. In December 2010 she opened the a.ware studio & store in Central Phoenix. She co-founded Art InterSection Italy with Angela Ellsworth, Tania Katan, Carol Panaro-Smith and James Hajicek.
